Mask Quest is a platformer from increpare, the prolific creator of Stephen's Sausage Roll and Bfxr. The core of a platformer is moving around obstacles and hazards, and most elaborate by adding combat or movement options. Mask Quest asks you to use your character's lungs like he forgot how to breathe. It sort of reminds me of revving Nero's sword in the Devil May Cry games; that is something you mostly have to remember to do in parallel with the rest of the game. The idea leads to some unique challenges: holding your breath and rushing through smoke, breathing at a difference pace to cough up water, exhaling to push away drones, and so on. Everything around the gameplay falls short. A silly story about getting a mask during a pandemic frames the game, but the connection between masks and breathing is completely missed somehow. It's filled with jokes that remind me of the Newgrounds era in a bad way, and the visuals beg for a competent pixel-artist.
